The Greatest Love Songs

Every song has a different meaning to each person, and some songs touch some people in a way that others cannot understand. This is my personal ranking of the greatest love songs ever written. Unlike most other lists, this one is multinational – because the greatest love songs are not always English.

NOTE: I might be biased because I am a huge fan of Ayumi Hamasaki, but the reason I am such a huge fan is largely because of the beautiful and unique lyrics she writes. Her music is, in my opinion, of superior quality and depth to most modern Western songs. Her voice isn’t at the level of people like Whitney Housten, but has beautiful power and emotion that are deserving of respect. I firmly believe that any genre of ‘greatest songs’ list MUST contain at least one of hers.

1. Jewel
Writer: Ayumi Hamasaki
Singer: Ayumi Hamasaki
Released: 2006
Language: Japanese
Why in my top 10: The depth and emotion of Ayumi’s lyrics, in my opinion, far outshine those of any other artist. She writes in a way that is painfully honest, never with a rose-coloured view or blindly idealistic. She writes of a world that we all know is dark and sorrowful, but gives us a ray of light that is simple enough to be believable. The love she writes of is one of the truest feelings of the human heart.

English translation:

These days, beneath the square grey sky
All kinds of desire have filled the world
But without losing sight of the light within it
I can walk ahead of it, always facing you.
For you teach me that there still are
Untainted things, even in the corners of the city.

When your body was exhausted
And you had fallen asleep
My breath so calm, I watched you.
In the whole world I am the only one
Who truly knows you
And your face without defences that I so love.

On a day like any other
When the sunlight poured
And a gentle breeze blew, that was the day
I alone felt so strongly that something
Was changing slowly within me.

Even though I wasn’t sad at all
The tears were falling
Because so painfully your feelings
Had seeped through the wounds deep in my heart
And then changed everything there to tenderness.

If you meet with deep sorrow
How I wish you’ll share it with me.
For the sake of that smiling face
I will do whatever I possibly can.
My precious treasure…
My precious treasure…

2. Tumhi Dekho Na
Movie: “Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna”
Singer: Sonu Nigam & Alka Yagnik
Released: 2006
Language: Hindi
Why in my top 10: The focus of this song is on love’s joy that is so unbearable it hardly seems real. We all reach a point in our relationship when we wonder if it’s too good to be true. I think it’s touching that this song defies that concern, telling us that this love really is perfect and true. I love Sonu Nigam’s soulful voice, the dreamy tempo, the mid-song chorus of angelic voices. I highly recommend the music video, which you can find on Youtube.

English translation:

Ah look… How did this happen?
I am yours and you, mine
I’m wonderstruck, rendered speechless before you
For the moon has emerged in the daytime.

I seem to be awake, but I’m lost in a dream…

Ah look… How did this happen?
I am yours and you, mine.

Beating hearts
Intoxicated bodies
There is a pureness in the air
This moment we are in is full of colour
Flowing from our eyes.

The blue sky showers down soft, silky rays of light…

Ah look… How did this happen?
I am yours and you, mine
I’m wonderstruck, rendered speechless before you
For the moon has emerged in the daytime.

I was unaware that it could be like this
That love would overcome me completely
True is this confession, true is this love
All else is just an illusion.

My breath rises in a soft melody of love…

Ah look… How did this happen?
I am yours and you, mine
I’m wonderstruck, rendered speechless before you
For the moon has emerged in the daytime.

I seem to be awake, but I’m lost in a dream…

I am yours and you, mine

How has the moon emerged in the daytime…

3. If You’re Not the One
Writer: Daniel Bedingfield
Singer: Daniel Bedingfield
Released: 2002
Language: English
Why in my top 10: Amidst the commercial, fake icons of the Western Pop-world who use lyrics written by other people, lip-synch to technologically-polished vocals, and pander to the fickle desires of the media, Daniel Beginfield shines as a true artist. This is, in my opinion, the best English love song ever written. We also have the bonus of Daniel’s beautiful voice, so tender and pure. He is a highly talented young man.

Lyrics:

If you’re not the one, then why does my soul feel glad today?
If you’re not the one, then why does my hand fit yours this way?
If you are not mine, then why does your heart return my call?
If you are not mine, would I have the strength to stand at all?

I never know what the future brings
But I know you’re here with me now
We’ll make it through
And I hope you are the one I share my life with

I don’t wanna run away but I can’t take it, I don’t understand
If I’m not made for you, then why does my heart tell me that I am?
Is there any way that I can stay in your arms?

If I don’t need you, then why am I crying on my bed?
If I don’t need you, then why does your name resound in my head?
If you’re not for me, then why does this distance maim my life?
If you’re not for me, then why do I dream of you as my wife?

I don’t know why you’re so far away
But I know that this much is true
We’ll make it through
And I hope you are the one I share my life with
And I wish that you could be the one I die with
And I’m praying you’re the one I build my home with
I hope I love you all my life

I don’t wanna run away but I can’t take it, I don’t understand
If I’m not made for you, then why does my heart tell me that I am
Is there any way that I can stay in your arms?

‘Cos I miss you, body and soul so strong that it takes my breath away
And I breathe you into my heart and pray for the strength to stand today
‘Cos I love you, whether it’s wrong or right
And though I can’t be with you tonight
You know my heart is by your side

I don’t wanna run away but I can’t take it, I don’t understand
If I’m not made for you, then why does my heart tell me that I am
Is there any way that I can stay in your arms?

4-humtum*

4. Hum Tum
Movie: “Hum Tum”
Singer: Babul Supriyo & Alka Yagnik
Released: 2004
Language: Hindi
Why in my top 10: Anyone who has seen the film “Hum Tum” cannot help but ache inside when this song is played. I am a great fan of lyrics (as you can probably tell), and these are absolutely beautiful. Combined with the heavenly piano and the soothing vocals, the lyrics flow like the poetical equivalent of silk. Another great video, too, if you feel like checking it out on Youtube.

English translation:

MAN:
Let your breath mingle with my breath a little
Let your gentle heartbeat increase a little
This is the moment’s request: come close…
Me and you, you and I…

WOMAN:
Let me dwell in your eyes a little
Let me melt into your arms a little
This is the moment’s request: come close…
Me and you, you and I…

MAN:
Let your breath mingle with my breath a little.

MAN:
A wrinkle here, a line there
Even your mascara will smear
WOMAN:
But in our eyes will be
A festival of our dreams.

MAN:
Let our bodies and souls smoulder a little
Let our modesty stray a little
WOMAN:
This is the moment’s request: come close…
Me and you, you and I…

MAN:
Let your breath mingle with my breath a little.

WOMAN:
Touch my body the way that you would
Play a melodious musical instrument
MAN:
Darkness is hidden in the locks of your hair
Let it down, so the night can go free.

FEMALE:
Let my scarf fall from my breast a little
Let the dewdrops trickle a little
MALE:
This is the moment’s request: come close…
Me and you, you and I…

Me and you, you and I…

5-dearest*

5. Dearest
Writer: Ayumi Hamasaki
Singer: Ayumi Hamasaki
Released: 2000
Language: Japanese
Why in my top 10: Another example of Ayumi’s realistic view of love. Again she ponders the imperfections of the world that we live in, and provides us with hope to combat any despair we might feel. She sings of love being like a journey that twists and turns through good and bad places. Her firm belief is that the destination of love is more important than the journey. With regards to the musical arrangement, Ayumi won a prestigious “Composer’s Award” for her co-composition along with DAI. The subtle harp behind the main instruments adds a beautiful touch to the peaceful music. Ayumi also made an acoustic orchestra version of this song, which is heavenly.

English translation:

If we could throw away
all but that which is truly important,
wouldn’t that be wonderful?
When reality is just cruel,
at such times, unfailingly,
if I close my eyes,
there smiling, is you…

Ah~ until the day
I fall into eternal sleep,
please let that smiling face
be with me constantly.

Are all humans full of sorrow?
Though we are such forgetful creatures,
for that which we should love,
for that which gives us love,
we give our all…

Ah~ when we first met
we were uncertain about everything.
We took the long way, didn’t we?
And how we hurt each other…

Ah~ until the day
I fall into eternal sleep,
please let that smiling face
be with me constantly.

Ah~ when we first met
we were uncertain about everything.
And though we took the long way,
we’ve finally arrived.
